Religion or Equality

I stumbled upon a blog of Jimmy Carter in my news feed. And was fairly touched by the article in question. After 60 years of devoting his life to the Southern Baptist Convention, he severed all ties all for the sake of equality. Being brought up in a conservative Baptist family, it was easy for me to relate to his life story. I fight this battle with my parents every time we have a talk about religion. And most of the time my view on religion is not what they want it to be (hence the nickname rebel at home). And the most annoying part of it all is when the throw carefully selected scriptures to justify their believes, completely taking the word of God out of it’s context.

And I know for some part most conservative Christians will condemn the ol’ president for doing so, but that doesn’t make him less of a Christian. That doesn’t mean he hasn’t stopped believing in God. I mean let’s get one thing straight…the laws and rules they had for women back than, was meant for women in that time. At some point even religion has to adapt to the changes in our menial human lives. If you educate a man, you just educate a man. You educate a woman, you educate a whole generation.Which I firmly believe!  Carter states that an educated woman have healthier children and is more likely to send the off to school. It is not only good for them but also for society.

But than a questions rises, is religion the big discriminator? I can not think of one religion that does not see women as a lesser being. Will religion ever co-exist peacefully with equality? I for one salute Mr  Carter for this brave and not easy decision. And have an utmost profound deep respect for him and the work he does. If only there were more Jimmy Carters in the world. I don’t know if it ever will happen, but one can only hope.

to bsc or not

He eindelijk in mijn afstudeer fase! Ja….I’ve come this far….if I have to fight for my BSC bring it on!!!
